Remove Stressors: Golden Milk

You will see that this is a different kind of post. Working and living in today’s time and environment is stressful. Software Development is no different and can actually be worse with so many deadlines and so many things happening at once.

Yeah there is Sport and Yoga. There is healthy eating. There is meditation. You can do all those things, but let’s be honest: They all require (sometimes quite a lot) effort.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have something quick and easy and affordable to make relaxing after a long hard day easier? Help you let go and fall asleep easier, while also doing something good for yourself? And that is delicious? And if you want sweet too?

If you think this way here is a recipe for you: Golden Milk.

Golden Milk come from the ayurvedic cuisine and uses the bodys reaction on mainly two spices: Tumeric and Ginger.

If is often combined with a bit of black pepper and cinnamon, making it easier for your body to absorb the active components of Tumeric.

This is combined with warm milk. Maybe your parents gave you warm milk with honey as a kid when you couldn´t sleep. Golden Milk likely provides a similar comfort.

Sure, you might need to get used to the taste. And probably want to experiment with the spices you prefer to make your unique “sleeping and relaxation elixir” .

Personally I try to drink it every night. When I can´t get around drinking it I have a harder time falling asleep. My sleep is worse.

Also I have an issue where I easily get middle ear infections as the eustachian tube (the connection between nose and ear) closes often, from having a little bit of a cold or just producing too much phlegm.

And the tumeric helps a lot with that too for me. Two times in the last 2 weeks I had it already that I thought I need to visit the hospital to get the stuff in the ear sucked out at the ENT. But I drank a golden milk before sleep and in the morning the tube was open and I could carefully remove the excess wet earwax.

So long story short, Golden Milk can help you tremendously. And it can be fitted to your taste.

The Recipe I´m personally using:

1 tablespoon powdered tumeric

1/2 tablespoon powdered ginger

1/4 tablespoon powdered black pepper

1 big cup Soy Milk

1/4 tablespoon powdered cinnamon

1-2 tablespoons honey for sweetening

I´m using my versatile rice cooker for convenience when cooking my Golden Milk. A normal pot works too, of course.

  1. Add the spices to the pot and heat them. Don’t let them burn, but let them give some nice fragrance. It smells and tastes better.
  2. When the spices smell more intensive, add the milk. Let it heat up a bit before adding in the honey (or your replacement) to sweeten it.
  3. Stir.
  4. Don’t let it boil, just let it get hot so that the spices and the milk and honey can combine nicely. Then let it heat to your prefer heat level.
  5. Either filter through a mesh into a cup if you don’t want to consume the spices or just pour it directly into your cup.

I highly recommend you to try it out and feel the difference.

If you are looking for variations you can try it with a drop or two of vanilla extract. Or to add a little bit of coconut oil. Or maybe star anise or cardamom is more to your taste?

Let me know how it works for you.

Best,

Frank
